The kawa and tikanga are the basis of this agreement between the Kahurānaki Marae Trustees/Committee and the Whānau, using the Marae facilities.
A specific, whānau representative, who will be expected to sign for the keys on the basis
that the kawa is understood and will be upheld by the whānau, is encouraged to read and
understand the requirements and their responsibilities.
Once the form is signed then the keys will be handed over.
The whānau representative will then be taken through the complex and shown where
everything is. It is the responsibility of the whanau representative to ensure the complex is
handed back to the marae in the same condition as found.
Damages must be reported
Tikanga = Customs
The tikanga for this marae is from Te Rangikoianake, Te Whatuiāpiti and Ngati Kahungunu. These can be interpreted in many ways but for the purposes of using the Kahurānaki Marae facilities, the following must be understood.
- Rangatiratanga. – Respect everything on the marae because it is the whanau, hapū and taonga. The appointed Trustees have the ultimate legal responsibility for the activities conducted on this marae. Appreciate what you have. you have chosen to represent your whanau by accepting the keys.
- Wairuatanga. – Spirituality is the essence of being at the marae. Karakia, tapu and noa are inherent elements of usage. Have a Kaumātua/Kuia, someone to advise you
in this area. - Whānaungatanga. – Relationships bound in history and blood. Ensure the whanau
understand the tikanga and kawa of our marae. You are expected to keep clean and
maintain the facilities during use. - Manaakitanga. – Hospitality and caring within your means. Your guests should be
aware of the tikanga and kawa of our marae. Reciprocity drives how and what
assistance your whanau will receive. - Kotahitanga. – Unity of purpose and being aware of all the marae stands for.
Kawa = Etiquette.
These kawa will ensure the marae is operated safely and within the realms of accepted
behaviour. The following is to be maintained:
- Gang Regalia: Gang regalia or Patches are not to be worn on Marae grounds or in
the Urupā. - Drugs: No drugs are to be used on the Marae grounds, or in the urupā.
- Smoking: There are designated areas for smoking and vaping.
- Alcohol: Alcohol is not to be consumed in the Marae grounds, except in the dining
room and kāuta during the hours agreed.
All drinking is to be managed and supervised to ensure the protection of the whanau
and the complex. - Urupā: Alcohol is not to be consumed in the urupa
- Photos: Photos for commercial gain are not to be used without permission
- Covid 19: Health and safety regarding Covid is the responsibility of the host whanau.
Protective measures must be followed if determined by the authorities. The marae
have masks, sanitiser and RATs tests to ensure whanau are kept safe.
Te Tautoko = Support
To Book the Marae:

- Your request will provide dates of: your booking, kaupapa and whakapapa to Kahurānaki.
- The booking person will contact you.
- Your request and information will be presented to the trustees for approval.
- You will be notified if your booking has been accepted/declined. Any request will be
forwarded to the Trustees for approval if it falls outside their monthly hui. - Website Booking: Bookings can be made via the Kahurānaki website booking facility
at www.kahuranaki.com. The booking person will then respond to your request.
Te Utu = Cost
Whānau
- Bond/ Booking fee: A bond of $200 and booking fee of $50 must be paid to the
Marae to confirm booking, within one week of telephone/email confirmation. This
will secure your dates. The booking fee is non-refundable. The bond is refundable
once the complex is fully cleaned, sheets back, rubbish away, everything stacked
where they should be, if not the bond will be retained. - Rate: Full Marae hire for whanau groups is $250.00 (gst incl) per 24 hours i.e. Friday
4pm to Sunday 4pm $500.00. This gives the whanau access to cooking, eating,
washing and sleeping facilities. Note: In the event of a Tangihana, you will be
refunded any monies paid that relate to time not used due to your whanau vacating
the marae. - Tangihanga rate is a koha.
- Part Hire: $50 per hour. Where accommodation or the full marae facilities are not
required, an hourly rate of $50 shall prevail subject to what facilities are being used.
Corporate
- Bond/ Booking fee: A bond of $200 and booking fee of $50 must be paid to the
Marae to confirm booking, within one week of telephone/email confirmation. This
will secure your dates. The booking fee is non-refundable. - Rate: Corporate is $500.00 (gst incl) per 24 hours. In the event of a Tangihana, you
will be refunded any monies paid that relate to time not used for your Kaupapa.
● Part hire: is $100 per hour. Where accommodation or the full marae facilities are
not required, an hourly rate of $100 shall prevail.
● NOTE: Koha placed on the marae ātea following a powhiri is separate from the
hireage and booking fees…
Marae hireage fees are to be paid through internet banking or bank deposit into the

General whānau Check list
Te Wharenui- Kahurānaki
- Your whānau must arrange for Kaumātua assistance – if you do not know, please ask.
- Photos: Please do NOT remove any photographs from the whare or marae, or hang
any photographs in the wharenui. - Please ensure the photos are not damaged by children running or jumping on the
matresses. - You will be shown the location of the mattresses and pillows upon your arrival.
- Set up the wharenui according to the Kaupapa of the hui. If you do not know, please
ask. - The flag is to be raised for all hui and guidance should be sought from kaumātua.
During your stay
- The wharenui is to be vacuumed daily and windows opened to air.
- Mattresses and pillows are stacked neat and tidy during the day
Your last day
- Return all pillows and mattresses to the storage area. Stacked neatly.
- Remove, and count all marae linen. These are dry cleaned or laundered, ironed and
returned to the Marae. This is at the user’s expense. - Stack black chairs neatly and leave by door on the left hand side as you enter the
wharenui. DO NOT remove these seats from the wharenui. - Vacuum the wharenui and empty the cleaner.
- Remove any rubbish to the bin for removal from site.
Te Wharekai- Te Whakaahu
- Tables: Are stacked neatly to the left of main door heading out to Wharenui
Note: white plastic ones are stacked together and brown ones are stacked close to
the wall. PLEASE DO NOT stack tables hard against the wall. - Chairs: these are stacked neatly to the right of main door heading out to Wharenui
- Wharekai floor: Sweep floor, and mop with hot soapy water. Leave clean and dry.
- Close all windows upon departure
Wharekai kitchen
- Crockery and cutlery: returned to correct storage areas.
- Pots: Cleaned and scrubbed after use
- Fridges: Remove all food from the fridge. Fridge must be washed and cleaned out.
The door are to be left slightly ajar upon leaving. - Chiller: Turn off chiller via external switch. Remove food and clean all racks.
- Mop chiller floor, leave doors ajar and leave to dry. Empty drip tray
- Dishwasher: Please read the operating and cleaning instructions before use.
- Gas Oven: Please read the operating and cleaning instructions before use.
- Combi Oven: Please read the operating and cleaning instructions before use.
- Bratt Pan: Please read the operating and cleaning instructions before use.
- Benches and surfaces: Please leave clean
- Report any breakages so that it can be replaced.
- Close all windows on departure.
- NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE ANY CROCKERY OR CUTLERY FROM THE MARAE
- Kitchen floor: Sweep floor, and mop with hot soapy water. Leave clean and dry
Te Kāuta- Te Rau Aroha
- Chiller: Leave cleaned out and washed. Chiller door left open.
- Pots and lids: scrubbed inside and out and are free of all black marks, and returned
to their correct storage place and stacked tidily. - Kauta (includes outside area) is left clean, disinfected and hosed at the end of your
stay. - Rubbish bins are emptied, washed out and clean
- Remove all rubbish from site
- Operating instructions for the Kauta are available.
- Report any damage or issues.
Ablution Block
- Please keep clean and tidy during your stay
- Wash out each day
- Sweep out (brooms solely for ablutions), clean and disinfect entire ablution area at
the end of your stay - Brooms/mops are to be thoroughly cleaned, hung and returned to their designated
area. - Use hose in ladies storage cupboard to hose out. Tap is under the hand basin..
- Remove all rubbish from site on your departure.
- Operating instructions for the Ablution block are available.
- Report any damage or issues.

Kauta
- Clean & operational.
- Chiller – Turn chiller on, empty water tin inside the
chiller regularly. Turn off on departure - Cooker – Low pressure cooker, gas supplied by marae,
high pressure gas cooker at the back, you must fill the
bottle or use your own 9kg. - Roaster – you supply the 9 kg gas bottle to operate.
General
- Rubbish– You provide rubbish bags and remove all of
your rubbish from the Marae complex on departure. - Hangi area – You need to provide stones, wood,
baskets etc.
Hangi area is not a rubbish burn and is to be left clean. - Gas – there is a mains supply for the hot water
califonts and the gas inside for the oven and outside in
the kauta is a low pressure cooker.
Check gas bottles are full. (Should not be red) - Under NO circumstances are any items to be removed
from the Marae. - Any problems that require a tradesmen i.e. no water,
ablutions blocked, no gas etc., contact the following;
